How Do I Choose Trainers?

If you go to a running shop to pick a pair of shoes you might be a little overwhelmed with the amount of choice. Here are a few top tips on how to pick the right pair for you!

The type of shoe is more important than the price of the shoe. Just because it is more expensive, doesn’t mean it’s better. Different brands are sized differently, therefore try before you buy! Match the shoe to the type of activity you are doing. Fit the shoe to your foot, not the foot to your shoe!

Things to look out for in a shoe:

  •    A good shoe should allow natural movement during walking and running.

  •  Have a stiff back that will provide rear support – When grabbing the heel with one hand and the shoe in the other. You should not be able to move the shoe side to side around the heel. A strong heel counter will help support the heel during activity.

  •  Heel height – no more than 3cm

  •  Have some torque – you should be able to hold either end of the shoe and twist it slightly.

  • Provide arch support

  • The toe box – Should be deep and provide enough room for your toes without squeezing them. Your toes should not touch the end of the shoe, leave approximately 1cm space from your longest toe to the end of the shoe. The shoe should also provide flexibility and bend where your toes bend.

  • Fastenings - laces, buckles or velcro straps hold the shoe comfortably and securely on the foot

  • The sole should soft, flexible and cushioned to provide maximum shock absorption and adequate grip.
